The workshop, led by singer/songwriter Marta Topferova, will focus on the creative side of music, especially in the area of songwriting, working with melodic, harmonic motifs and lyrics. Marta considers the art of songwriting as one of the most beautiful ways of self-discovery and is very happy to share her diverse knowledge. The workshop will offer the following:
- Introduction to the creative process, how to tune in, focus
- Examples of songs and insight into how they were created
- How to work with melodic motifs, how to develop them
- How to harmonize a melody
- How to tune in with lyrics, their rhythm, their story and how to set it to music
- How to accompany a song: does the song have a steady rhythm or does it change?
- Create and develop lyrics, a musical motif, or set a folk text to music
- Participants can bring their own lyrics or melody to explore during the workshop
Marta Topferova is a unique singer and songwriter who offers a wide range of knowledge of Latin American music and various folk genres. As an eleven-year-old girl, she immigrated to the United States, where she later studied and performed with leading Latin American musicians. After returning to the Czech Republic in 2012, she has also been writing songs for her ensemble Milokraj, which draws inspiration from Czech and Moravian folk music. She accompanies herself on guitar, Venezuelan four-string cuatro and percussion. Marta has written over a hundred songs, released nine albums, and performs all over the world. Marta is fluent in Czech, English and Spanish and sings and composes in all three languages. The workshop will be held in English. Bring a blanket, a pen and paper and your instrument if you play one.
